ABSTRACT
Objective: Language sample analysis (LSA) is an important method used to evaluate individuals' language skills and to create intervention plans. However, there is limited information on how frequently speech and language therapists (SLTs) use this method and the challenges they face. This study aims to examine the frequency, methods, and challenges SLTs encounter in Türkiye regarding their use of LSA. Material and Methods: The research was conducted using a general survey model. The sample consisted of 103 SLTs working in public and private hospitals, universities, and special education and rehabilitation centers in Türkiye. The participants were selected using non-probability haphazard sampling. Data were collected online via a demographic information form and the Language Sample Analysis Usage Survey for SLTs. The questionnaire aimed to determine the frequency of LSA usage, the procedures followed, and the challenges faced by SLTs. Data were analyzed using IBM SPSS 27.0 software, and frequency and percentage analyses were conducted. Results: According to the findings, 48.54% of the participants reported using LSA in their language assessments. The most used method, preferred by 72% of participants, was Turkish-Systematic Analysis of Language Transcripts (TR-SALT). The main reason 98.11% of participants do not use LSA is that it takes too long time. Additionally, 69.90% of the participants found the analysis process difficult. In addition, a significant number of SLTs reported that they needed training on LSA (68.93%), language sample analysis (66.99%), language sample collection methods (52.43%) and interpretation of language sample analysis (47.57%). Conclusion: The study results show that LSA usage is not widespread among SLTs in Türkiye. Most participants prefer not to use LSA due to time limitations and difficulties in the analysis process. This result highlights the need for more training and resources to increase the use of LSA.
