ABSTRACT
Objective: The aim of this research is to examine differences in humor styles and problem-solving skills among participants based on sociodemographic characteristics, as well as to explore the relationship between these two variables. Material and Methods: Data for this cross-sectional descriptive research were collected from 95 midwives and nurses using the Descriptive Characteristics Form, Humor Styles Scale, and Problem Solving Inventory (PSI). Data collection was conducted face-toface by researchers between July and December 2019. The KolmogorovSmirnov normality test, Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskal-Wallis test, and Spearman's Rho correlation analysis were used for data analysis. Results: The humor styles of participants, in order of frequency, were Affiliative Humor (39.96±8.65), Self-Enhancing Humor (36.62±9.36), Self-Defeating Humor (25.46±8.78), and Aggressive Humor (18.38±5.66). For problemsolving styles, the mean PSI score was 83.14±17.47. A significant negative correlation was found between the total PSI score and the Evaluative Approach sub-dimension with Affiliative Humor (r=-0.270, p=0.008) and SelfEnhancing Humor (r=-0.281, p=0.006). Additionally, a low negative correlation was identified between the Thinking and Self-Confident Approach sub-dimension scores and Self-Enhancing Humor (r=-0.273, p=0.008). A low but significant positive correlation was also found between the Impulsive Approach sub-dimension and Affiliative Humor (r=0.205, p=0.046). Conclusion: The research found that participants frequently used positive humor styles and moderately used negative humor styles. Moreover, individuals who more frequently used positive humor styles demonstrated higher problem-solving skills. These findings suggest that humor may play an important role in enhancing problem-solving skills. It is recommended that strategies be developed to promote positive humor styles among health professionals to strengthen their communication and problem-solving abilities.
