Aralık 2019'da Çin'in Wuhan kentinde başlayan bir salgın hastalık dünya gündemine oturdu. Şubat 2020'de akut solunum sendromu olarak tanımlanan hastalığın etkeni yeni bir virüs türü, SARS-CoV-2 olarak açıklandı ve COVID-19 olarak isimlendirildi. 17 Haziran 2020 itibarıyla Dünya Sağlık Örgütü verilerine göre 216 lokasyonda doğrulanmış vaka sayısı 8.061.550'ye ve ölüm sayısı 440.290'a ulaşmıştı. COVID-19 pandemisi süreci, salgın hastalıkların ülke sınırlarına sığmayan önemli ekonomik, sosyal, psikolojik etkileri ile yüzleşmemizi sağlamıştır. Salgın hastalıklarla mücadelede; etkin sağlık iletişimi ile toplumun risk algılarının anlaşılması, tutum, davranış ve kaygıların belirlenmesi, hastalığın kontrolünde sağlık çalışanlarının tek sağlık konsepti çerçevesinde iş birliği ve eş güdümünün sağlanması, karantina, izolasyon, dezenfeksiyon ve sosyal mesafe gibi önemli biyogüvenlik uygulamalarının önemi anlaşılmıştır. İnternet ve sosyal medyanın sağlık iletişimi, halkın bilgilendirilmesi ve salgın yönetimi için önemli araçlar olduğu görülmüştür. COVID-19 salgını süreci, bilim insanları ile karar vericiler arasında etkili iletişim, bilgi paylaşımı ve bilimsel araştırmaların desteklenmesinin, mevcut ve gelecekteki salgın hastalıkların kontrolü ve yönetimine önemli katkı sağlayabileceğini göstermiştir.

In December 2019, an epidemic disease started in Wuhan, China and sat on the world agenda. The infectious agent of the disease defined as acute respiratory syndrome in February 2020 was announced as a novel coronavirus called coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and the disease was named as COVID-19. In 17 June 2020, the number of confirmed cases in 216 locations had reached 8.061.550 and the number of deaths was 440.290 according to the World Health Organization data. The COVID-19 pandemic process has enabled us to face significant economic, social, and psychological effects of epidemics that outflow the country's borders. Through health communication understanding the risk perceptions of the society, determining attitudes, behaviors and concerns; ensuring cooperation and coordination of health workers within the framework of the one health concept in the control of pandemic; the importance of biosecurity practices such as quarantine, isolation, disinfection and social distance has been understood in the fight against epidemics. It has been seen that internet and social media are important tools for health communication, public information and outbreak management. The COVID-19 pandemic has shown that effective communication and information sharing between scientists and decision-makers and supporting scientific research can make a significant contribution to the control and management of current and future epidemics.
