ABSTRACT
Objective: The aim of the study was to determine the traditional practices and related factors that mothers with newborn babies carry out for themselves and their babies in the first 28 days. Material and Methods: This cross-sectional study was completed with 305 mothers with newborn babies (0-28 days). The data collection tool was a descriptive form created by the researchers. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews between March 20 and July 30, 2022. Results: The mean age of the mothers in the study was 29.28±5.3 years. In the study, 51.1% of the newborns were girls and 63.3% were 22-28 days old. While 64.3% of the mothers participating in the study practiced at least one traditional practice, 52.8% practiced traditional practices related to infant care and 42.6% practiced traditional practices related to puerperium. It was observed that the most frequently practiced traditional practices were protection from puerperal fever with al writing/tokka/scarf for the mothers themselves and not being left alone to prevent puerperal fever, salting, burying the umbilical cord and dressing/dressing in yellow clothes for their babies. A significant difference was found between the mothers' use of traditional practices and place of residence, education, age, employment status, income, family structure, living with elders, number of children, history of miscarriage/mortality, age of the baby, duration of hospitalization, finding traditional practices useful, and knowledge about traditional practices in puerperium and infant care. Conclusion: Mothers continue to practice traditional practices for themselves and their babies. Some of these practices start in neonatal period. Mothers should be informed by nurses with a transcultural approach in neonatal period. Observations on traditional practices should be made, trainings should be planned and carried out effectively during postnatal hospitalization and infant-child follow-up.
