ABSTRACT
With the prolongation of life expectancy all over the world, the increase in the number of the elderly has become remarkable. Along with aging, many negative conditions such as chronic diseases, the side effects of the drugs used, the inability to cope with the diseases and the symptoms that occur as a result of the diseases arise. The elderly try many methods to reduce these negative situations. One of these methods is traditional and complementary medicine (TCM) practices. Many reasons such as strengthening the immune system, reducing the side effects of drugs, pain management, symptom management in chronic diseases and increasing the quality of life in the elderly, not meeting expectations from modern treatment methods, feeling better mentally and physically, have led to the interest in TCM applications. However, the use of these methods in particular by the elderly, due to their existing chronic diseases and the multiple drugs they use, also poses a risk. As it is seen in the literature, especially the elderly prefer herbal products from TCM methods and benefit from their friends and circles as a source of information, making the situation even more risky. In this respect, it is very important to get information from them about TCM practices during their care in order to protect the elderly from existing risks, and to direct them to safe centers in order to get the right method and application. With this review, it is aimed to create a framework about the use of TCM practices by the elderly, the reasons for using them, information sources and the effects of TCM practices on the elderly.
