ABSTRACT
Objective: This study aimed to determine the relationship between loss of self and cognitive insight in individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia. Material and Methods: The study is a descriptive relational study conducted between January and April 2023 with 81 schizophrenia patients aged 18-65 in remission registered in the Psychiatry Outpatient Clinic of a hospital in Konya province. Data were collected using the Personal Information Form, Loss of Self and Beck Cognitive Insight Scale. The data of the study were evaluated using the SPSS for Windows 22.0 statistical program. The normal distribution of the data was evaluated with the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and Q-Q plot. Since the data showed a normal distribution, t-test and one-way analysis of variance were used in independent groups. Results: The mean scores of men on the Loss of Self Scale were higher than women (p<0.05). The difference between marital status and the Loss of Ego Scale is significant, the difference is due to individuals whose spouses have died (p<0.05). The difference between educational status and the Loss of Ego Scale is significant, the difference is due to individuals who are primary school graduates (p<0.05). Women have higher Beck Cognitive Insight Scale mean scores than men (p<0.05). The difference between educational status and the Beck Cognitive Insight Scale is significant, the difference is due to individuals who are high school graduates (p<0.05). A negative correlation was found between loss of self and cognitive insight (r: 0.846; p: 0.001). Conclusion: In our study, as the loss of self decreases in individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia, their cognitive insight increases. Individuals who are male, have lost their spouses and have a low level of education are in the risk group in terms of loss of self; whereas individuals who are male and have a low level of education are in the risk group in terms of cognitive insight. According to the results; Intervention programs aimed at reducing self-deprecation and increasing cognitive insight should be planned for nurses who provide care to individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia. It is recommended that studies be conducted to reveal the factors affecting self-deprecation and cognitive insight through advanced analyses.
