ABSTRACT
Objective: The study was conducted to investigate the relationship between disability and self-care agency in patients with schizophrenia. Material and Methods: The data of this descriptive, cross-sectional and correlational study were collected at Black Sea Region a Community Mental Health Center. The population of the study consisted of patients with schizophrenia who presented to community mental health center between April 2021-September 2021. Of the patients in the study population, 154 who met the inclusion criteria of the study and agreed to participate in the study comprised the study sample. The ''Socio-demographic Information Form'', ''Brief Disability Questionnaire (BDQ)'' and ''Exercise of Self-Care Agency Scale (ESCA)'' were used to collect data. The data were analyzed using the SPSS 22. In the analysis of the data, numbers, arithmetic mean, percentile distributions, standard deviation, Cronbach's alpha coefficient, Pearson correlation analysis and linear regression analysis were used. Results: According to the results of the study, the mean scores the patients obtained from the BDQ and ESCA were 11.14±4.18 and 75.16±16.69 respectively. The analysis of the relationship between the mean scores the patients obtained from the BDQ and ESCA demonstrated a strong negative correlation between them. In addition, it was determined that disability levels of schizophrenic patients had a negative effect on the self-care agency levels at a rate of 54.4%. Regression beta values are R2=0.544; ß=-0.738; p<0.05 was determined. Conclusion: The mean scores obtained from the BDQ and ESCA by the patients with schizophrenia were moderate. As their BDQ score increased, their ESCA score decreased. It is recommended that the psychiatric nurse should focus on supportive and instructive trainings and different skill activities.
