ABSTRACT
Objective: It is aimed to conduct some health screenings and determine the health problems of Turkish and refugee students in primary school within the scope of school health nursing. Material and Methods: The research is a descriptive and cross-sectional study conducted with 1,315 students in six primary schools selected in March 2021 by simple random sampling method in areas where refugee families live intensively in a province in the Aegean region of Türkiye. Data were collected with the school health student screening form developed by the researchers. Ethical permissions were obtained for the research. The statistical analysis of the study was evaluated using number, percentage, mean, chi-square, and t-test in SPSS 29.0 program. Results: 90.8% of the students are Turkish, while 9.2% are foreign nationals. The majority of foreign national students are Iranian and Afghan. Most students are of normal weight, but the obesity rate is higher among Turkish students and the rate of obesity is lower among foreign national students. 13.8% of the students have vision problems, while 0.5% have suspected strabismus. While more Turkish students have suspected vision problems, foreign national students have suspected strabismus. 65.8% of the students have one or more decayed teeth, 5.2% have lice/nits on their scalp, and 7.5% have inadequate hand hygiene. There is a statistically significant difference between Turkish and foreign national students in terms of vision problems, and hand hygiene evaluations. Conclusion: The results of this study have shown that students have problems with body mass index, vision problems, inadequate hygiene behavior, and oral/dental health. These findings indicate the need for screenings to identify students' health problems within the scope of school health services and the need for education and counseling for identified problems. The use of health care models placed within school health services and culturally adapted for foreign national students can facilitate access to health care services for these children in solving the health problems of foreign national students. It is recommended to develop and implement school health services focused on protecting and improving students' health.
