ABSTRACT
Objective: In this study it was aimed to evaluate the blunt traumas of the pediatric age group in terms of the occurrence of the trauma, the severity of the injury, and the way it was handled in terms of forensic medicine. Material and Methods: The files and records in the hospital automation system of patients aged 0-18, who were treated with diagnoses related to blunt trauma at the Emergency Department of Ondokuz Mayıs University Faculty of Medicine between 01.01.2015 and 01.07.2020, were retrospectively examined. The analysis focused on demographic data, how injuries occur, the impact of the traumas on the body, and whether the cases were recorded as forensic cases in the hospital system. The obtained data were analyzed. Results: 64.4% of the cases were boys, and 36.6% were girls. The mean age was 6.5±5 years. The most injured body area was the face and upper extremities. 59.9% (n: 913) of the cases did not require hospitalization, 20.6% (n: 314) were injured in a way that would endanger their life, and 59.8% (n: 912) of them have the injuries, that they could not be treated with simple medical intervention. Only 39.4% (n: 600) of the cases were processed through forensic file records, and 8 cases were evaluated in terms of abuse. Conclusion: Blunt traumas are frequently encountered in children and cause serious morbidity and mortality, which may also be a sign of abuse. It should not be forgotten that injuries caused by blunt trauma, along with the temporary and or permanent severe consequences they may have on the body, can also be a sign of abuse. Physicians' adequate knowledge of the forensic aspect as well as the medical management of trauma plays an important role in the evaluation of these cases.
