ABSTRACT
Objective: The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between the concerns of healthcare workers in Istanbul about being exposed to violence and being exposed to violence in the future before and during the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and whether this relationship differs according to various characteristics of healthcare workers. Material and Methods: The sample of this descriptive and correlational design study consisted of 392 healthcare professionals working in İstanbul. The data were collected using a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Exposure to Violence Scale, and the Fear of Future Violence Scale. The relationships between health care workers' exposure to violence and fear of future violence were examined by structural equation modeling, and whether exposure to violence and fear of future violence differed according to various characteristics of the employees was analyzed by difference tests. Results: According to the results of the structural equation model, the relationship between employees' exposure to direct and indirect violence before and during the COVID-19 pandemic and their concerns about being exposed to violence in the future is directly proportional. According to the results of the difference tests, it was observed that female healthcare workers had higher concerns about being exposed to violence in the future than male healthcare workers, healthcare workers with shift working patterns had higher exposure to direct violence at work during COVID-19 than those working continuous daytime, and healthcare workers with 51-60 hours of weekly working hours were higher than healthcare workers working ≤40 hours. Conclusion: While violence in health continued to exist before the COVID-19 pandemic, it continued to increase during the pandemic period. This situation has increased the concerns of healthcare workers about being exposed to violence in the future.
