ABSTRACT
Objective: While Pilates exercises are particularly preferred by women and have become one of the most popular forms of exercise, in recent years, the reformer, especially used in Pilates, has become a highly favored apparatus. However, there is limited scientific data on the effects of reformer exercises on motor skills. Therefore, the aim of this study is to examine the impact of Pilates exercises performed with a reformer on the balance and flexibility parameters of sedentary women. Material and Methods: A total of 37 healthy sedentary women (average age 21.11±0.808 years; average height 162.22±5.583 cm; average weight 55.94±9.088 kg) were included in the study on a voluntary basis. Participants underwent a Pilates exercise program on reformer apparatus 3 days a week for 8 weeks, with each session lasting 60 minutes and supervised by individual trainers. Flexibility performance was assessed using the sit-and-reach test, and balance performance was determined using the Y-balance test. Measurements were taken as pre-tests and post-tests. The normal distribution of the obtained data was assessed using the Shapiro-Wilk test. The paired samples t-test was used to compare pre-test and post-test values, and a significance level of p<0.05 was accepted. Results: According to the results obtained from the study, a statistically significant increase was observed in flexibility, right leg balance, and left leg balance performance parameters when comparing pre-test and post-test values (p<0.05). Conclusion: In conclusion, it can be said that reformer exercises are an effective method to improve flexibility, as well as right and left leg balance parameters in sedentary women.
