ABSTRACT
Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilisation (IASM) on range of motion, pain, sleep and quality of life in office workers with chronic low back pain. Material and Methods: Thirty-four office workers (17 female and 17 male) aged 30-50 years with chronic low back pain participated voluntarily in the study. Participants were randomly divided into IASM (n=17) and placebo groups (n=17). Both groups received IASM twice a week for 4 weeks. The placebo group was treated with the faces of the instruments that had no effect on the tissues. Demographic characteristics of the participants were collected with a case report form. Before and after the application, a Numerical Pain Scale (NPS) was applied for pain intensity and Oswestry Low Back Pain Disability Questionnaire for disability determination, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) for sleep quality, and SF-36 Quality of Life Index for quality of life. In addition, lumbar normal range of motion measurements were performed with a smartphone. Results: In the IASM group, there was a statistically significant difference in range of motion, NPS, PSQI and SF36 values compared to the placebo group (p<0.05). In the placebo group, there was a significant difference in range of motion, NPS, PSQI, lumbar function, SF-36 values after treatment compared to pre-treatment (p<0.05). As a result of the study, it was found that IASM application increased range of motion, sleep and quality of life and decreased pain severity in individuals with chronic low back pain. In addition, it was observed that IASM had a placebo effect according to NPS, PSQI, Oswestry and SF-36 questionnaires. Conclusion: IASM had positive effects on range of motion, pain, sleep and quality of life in office workers with chronic low back pain.
