ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine the effect of clinical practice on senior nursing students' problem-solving and decision-making skills. Material and Methods: The sample of this study, which was conducted in the pretest-posttest quasi-experimental type without a control group, consisted of 77 students. Data were collected using Descriptive Characteristics Form, Problem Solving Inventory (PSI), and Clinical Decision Making in Nursing Scale (CDMNSTr). Descriptive statistics, independent sample t-test, dependent sample t-test were used in the analysis of the data. Results: It was determined that the PSI mean score of the students in the pre-test was 85.97±18.29, the post-test mean score was 93.01±18.40. While the pre-test mean score of CDMNSTr was 97.82±16.64, post-test score was 138.14±15.13. A statistically significant difference was found between the pre-test and post-test PSI total, the Thinking approach, the Self-confident approach, the Planned approach sub-dimension mean scores, and the CDMNSTr and its subdimensions (p0.05). Conclusion: Nursing students' problem-solving and decision-making skills were moderate. It was found that the students' taking a course related to problem solving and decision making decreased their perception of problem-solving skills in the post-test, and male students' pre-test Evaluating results subdimension mean score was significantly higher than that of female students. It is recommended to add different teaching methods to the clinical teaching process in order to develop problem-solving and decision-making skills.
