Readability Level of Keratoconus-Related Websites and Their Reliability as an Information Source: A Cross-Sectional Study

ÖZET
 Amaç: Google arama motoruna 'keratokonus' yazıldıktan sonra ekranda beliren ilk 100 web sitesinde yer alan metinlerin Türkçe okunabilirlik düzeyi ve bilgi güvenirliğini değerlendirmek. Gereç ve Yöntemler: Bu çalışmada, Türkçe için etkinliği bilimsel olarak kanıtlanmış okunabilirlik ölçütleri arasında Ateşman ve Bezirci-Yılmaz tarafından geliştirilen okunabilirlik formülleri ile keratokonus hastalığı hakkında bilgi veren web siteleri değerlendirilmiştir. Ayrıca JAMA, DISCERN ve Global Quality indeksleriyle bu sitelerde verilen bilgilerin ne denli güvenilir olduğu, göz hastalıkları alanında çalışan 2 ayrı hekim tarafından puanlanmıştır. Bulgular: Ateşman okunabilirlik formülü ile bakıldığında web siteleri ortalama 50,0±6,4 (33,8-65,8) puan almış ve bu puana karşılık olarak 11-12 yıllık eğitimle okunabilir bulunmuşlardır. Keratokonus ile ilgili internet siteleri Bezirci-Yılmaz okunabilirlik formülüne göre 11,6±6,6 (7,0-19,4) yıllık eğitimle okunabilir saptanmıştır. JAMA skoruna göre web siteleri ortalama 1,6±0,4 (1-2) almıştır. Total DISCERN skoruna göre 35,5±8,7 (21-58) puan aldıkları belirlenmiştir. Global Quality skoruna göre web siteleri ortalama 1,9±0,7 (1-4) puan almış ve tüm skorlama sistemlerine göre bilgi kalitesi düşük seviyede bulunmuştur. Sonuç: Keratokonus hastalığından bahseden web sitelerinin okunabilirlik seviyesi lise son ve lisans düzeyinde eğitimle okunabilir saptanmıştır. Keratokonus hastalarının, hastalıkları hakkında bilgi sahibi olması için web sitelerinin daha kolay okunabilir bir dille yazılmış olması gerekmektedir. Ayrıca bu konuyla ilgili web siteleri keratokonus hakkında daha kaliteli bilgiler içermelidir.

ABSTRACT
 Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the texts in the first 100 websites that appeared on the screen after typing 'keratokonus' into the Google search engine in terms of readability and information reliability in Turkish. Materials and Methods: The readability of websites containing information about keratoconus disease was evaluated in this study using scientifically proven readability criteria for Turkish, including readability formulas developed by Ateşman and Bezirci-Yılmaz. Furthermore, the reliability of the information provided on these sites was scored by two different ophthalmologists using the JAMA, DISCERN, and Global Quality indexes. Results: The websites received an average score of 50.0±6.4 (33.8- 65.8) on the Ateşman readability formula and were found to be readable with 11-12 years of education. The Bezirci-Yılmaz readability formula determined that the evaluated websites were readable with 11.6±6.6 (7.0-19.4) years of education. While the JAMA score assigned to the websites was 1.6±0.4 (1-2), the total DISCERN score assigned to them was 35.5±8.7 (21-58). Further, the websites received a Global Quality score of 1.9±0.7 (1-4), and the information quality was found to be low when compared to all scoring systems. Conclusion: The readability level of the websites related to keratoconus disease was determined to be readable with an education at the last high school and undergraduate level. The websites should be written in a more readable language so that keratoconus patients can obtain information about their disease. Furthermore, websites on this subject should provide more accurate information about keratoconus.

1. TERMS OF USE

- Providing scientific articles, books and informative publications for health industry.

- Providing structural, statistical and editorial support to article preparation stage for scientific journals.

4. GENERAL PROVISIONS

4.1. "Turkiye Klinikleri" is completely free to determine which of the services and contents provided in the "SITE" will be charged.

4.2. People benefiting from the services provided by "Turkiye Klinikleri" and using the website can use the "SITE" only according to the law and only for personal reasons. Users have the criminal and civil liability for every process and action they take in the "SITE". Every USER agrees, declares and undertakes that they will not proceed by any function or action infringement of rights of "Turkiye Klinikleri"s and/or other third parties', they are the exclusive right holder on usage, processing, storage, made public and revealing any written, visual or auditory information reported to Turkiye Klinikleri" and/or "SITE" to the third parties. Any harm, criminal and civil liability resulted or will result from changes and/or corrections required by "Turkiye Klinikleri" and were not made on time by the "USER"s belongs completely to the users.

4.8. "Turkiye Klinikleri" may give links through the "SITE" to other websites and/or "CONTEXT"s and/or folders that are outside of their control and owned and run by third parties. Being late or failure of performance or non-defaulting of this and similar cases like this will not be the case from the viewpoint of "Turkiye Klinikleri", and "Turkiye Klinikleri" will not have any damage liability for these situations. "Force majeure" term will be regarded as outside of the concerned party's reasonable control and any situation that "Turkiye Klinikleri" cannot prevent even though it shows due diligence. Also, force majeure situations include but not limited to natural disasters, rebellion, war, strike, communication problems, infrastructure and internet failure, power cut and bad weather conditions.

8. LAW AND AUTHORISATION TO FOLLOW

Turkish Law will be applied in practicing, interpreting the hereby "Terms of Use" and managing the emerging legal relationships within this "Terms of Use" in case of finding element of foreignness, except for the rules of Turkish conflict of laws. Ankara Courts and Enforcement Offices are entitled in any controversy happened or may happen due to hereby contract.

9. CLOSING AND AGREEMENT

Hereby "Terms of Use" come into force when announced in the "SITE" by "Turkiye Klinikleri". The users are regarded to agree to hereby contract terms by using the "SITE". "Turkiye Klinikleri" may change the contract terms and the changes will be come into force by specifying the version number and the date of change on time it is published in the "SITE".
