ABSTRACT
Objective: This study was conducted to investigate the effect of oral mucositis on the quality of life in children receiving chemotherapy treatment in pediatric hematology-oncology clinics. Material and Methods: The sample of this descriptive and cross-sectional study consisted of 58 children who had been receiving chemotherapy treatment. A ''Child and Parent Information Form,'' the ''World Health Organization Mucositis Classification Index,'' the ''Children's International Mucositis Evaluation Scale (ChIMES),'' and the ''Scale for Quality of Life in Pediatric Oncology Patients Aged 7-12 Child'' were used to collect study data. Descriptive statical methods, independent sample t-test, Spearman correlation analysis, ANOVA analysis were used to evaluate the data. Results: The grade of mucositis in all children (100%) before chemotherapy treatment (day 0) was defined as grade 0. Ten days after chemotherapy treatment, it was determined that the children had varying grades mucositis. It was found that there was a statistically significant difference between oral mucositis developing in children receiving chemotherapy and their quality of life (p<0.01). It was determined that as the grade of children's mucositis increased according to the World Health Organization Mucositis Assessment Index, their mean pain scores increased according to ChIMES, as well. A very strong positive correlation was found between the degree of mucositis and the mean scores of pain (r=0.948**, p<0.01) and mean scores of quality of life (r=0.614**, p<0.01) of the children. Conclusion: It was found that as the severity of mucositis in children increased, their pain scores increased, and their quality of life decreased in parallel to it. To increase the quality of life in children receiving chemotherapy, it is recommended to evaluate the oral cavity every day, reduce the development of mucositis as much as possible, and take measures to relieve the mucositis-induced pain in the early period.
