ABSTRACT
Objective: The aim of this study is to examine the hope and positive-negative affect levels of the mothers who had children with stuttering. Material and Methods: The research included 33 (10 female and 23 male) mothers with children who had stuttering and whose age ranged from 6 to 12. The mean value of children's age was 9.30 while this value was 34.85 for the mothers. The Adult Hope Scale, Positive and Negative Affect Schedule, Stuttering Severity Instrument4 and Demographic Information form were utilized for data collection. Results: As the ages of children with stuttering increased, the mothers were observed to have lower levels of positive affect and higher levels of negative affect. The hope and positive-negative affect levels of the mothers did not significantly differ according to the gender of the children. It was seen that those mothers who graduated from middle school had significantly higher levels of hope compared to those who were elementary and high school graduates. Conclusion: A steady decrease in the hope levels of the mothers who had children with stuttering referred to the existence of stuttering rather than its severity. Therefore, regular and individual meetings with mothers could hold a positive impact on the course of stuttering intervention.
