Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate upper extremity function, presence of pain, postural changes and quality of life in male and female hairdressers and to make comparasion between groups. Material and Methods: A total of 128 volunteer individuals, 64 female and 64 male hairdressers, were included in the descriptive comparative study. Short Form McGill Pain Questionnaire (SF-MPQ) for pain status, Corbin Postural Assessment Scale for postural changes, the Turkish version of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand Problems Questionnaire (DASH-T) for upper extremity functional status and short form-36 (SF-36) for quality of life were used. Results: The ages of female and male hairdressers were 31.12±9.69 and 30.42±9.45 years, and working years were 13.67±7.10 and 14.13±6.10 years, respectively. Significantly differences between groups were found in the bodily pain (p=0.00), general health (p=0.01), vitality (p=0.01) and emotional role (p=0.01) measurement results of the SF-36 quality of life scale, and the sensory pain score (p=0.01) and pain severity (p=0.00) of the SF-MPQ. In addition, there were statistical differences between groups in the results of the evaluation of DASH-T function/symptom (p=0.00) and work scores (p=0.02). According to the results of Corbin scale, the postural characteristics of the groups were similar (p>0.05). Conclusion: According to our study results, male hairdresser' quality of life, upper extremity functionalities and pain intensity are better than female hairdressers. However, the postural characteristics of male and female hairdressers are similar. In the future, it is recommended to investigate the effects of ergonomic factors and gender differences on musculoskeletal symptoms.
