Objective: This study was carried out to examine the associated between the levels of empathic tendency and willingness to work with elderly people of nursing students doing clinical practice in nursing homes. Material and Methods: The sample of the descriptive type of study consisted of 95 nursing students doing clinical practice in a nursing home in Istanbul. Study data were collected using the participant information form, Empathetic Tendency Scale (ETS) and Willingness to Work with Elderly People Scale Turkish version (WEPS-T). Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficient, independent samples t-test, simple and multiple regression analyses were used to evaluate the data. Results: The mean ETS total score was 71.10±9.73 while the mean WEPS-T total score was 83.80±16.19. There was a positive, statistically significant correlation between the mean total ETS and the WEPS-T total score (p<0.01). It was determined that empathic tendency had a positive (β=0.434) and statistically significant effect (F=21.604; p=0.000) in predicting the willingness to work with elderly people and explained approximately 19% of the variance (R2 =0.189). It was determined that the presence of elderly people in the family (β=0.182), willingness to work with elderly people after graduation (β=0.453) and empathic tendency (β=0.358) together had a statistically significant positive effect in predicting the willingness to work with elderly people (F=14.317; p=0.000) and explained 38% of the variance (R2 =0.389). Conclusion: Nursing students' empathic tendency and willingness to work with elderly people are at a moderate level. As nursing students' empathic tendency levels increase, their willingness to work with elderly people also increases. Empathic tendency alone and the presence of elderly people in the family and the desire to work with elderly people after graduation are important determinants of nursing students' willingness to work with elderly people.
