ABSTRACT
Objective: Rapid naming refers to the rapid and automatic retrieval of phonological information of visual stimuli from the long-term memory. Clinical studies emphasize that rapid naming is significantly related to executive functions, auditory processing, phonological awareness, and literacy in adulthood, as well as in preschool and school-age. However, due to the absence of a valid and reliable test to assess rapid naming abilities in Turkish-speaking adults, it is not possible to conduct research on these relationships and their effects. In this context, this study aims to examine the validity and reliability of the Rapid Naming Test (RNT), which was developed for Turkish-speaking children aged 60-125 months, in individuals aged 20-49 years. Material and Methods: The current version of the RNT was administered to a sample of 544 participants aged 20-49. Based on the obtained data, validity analyses included exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses to assess construct validity, comparisons of the 27% lower-upper groups, gender, educational status, and age to evaluate discriminant validity, and item-total score correlations. Reliability analyses assessed internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and inter-rater reliability. Additionally, cutoff intervals were proposed using relative methods to provide an overall assessment. Results: According to the exploratory factor analysis, the test was found to be a single factor and was confirmed by confirmatory factor analysis. In discriminant validity, it was observed that the test could distinguish between the lower and upper 27%, educational and age groups. In the reliability analysis, the internal consistency (0.863) and test-retest values (0.889) were found to be high. Cutoff intervals were established for the three age groups, and the intervals were determined as low, moderate, and high. Conclusion: The data obtained in this study supported that RNT can be used as a valid and reliable tool to assess rapid naming skills in adults.
