ABSTRACT
Objective: This study was conducted to evaluate nursing students' knowledge and attitudes towards monitoring vital signs, as well as the factors influencing these attitudes. Material and Methods: This descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted with 458 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year nursing students at the Faculty of Health Sciences at a university in Türkiye. The data of the study were collected using the Student Identification Form, Vital Signs Scale and Vital Signs Achievement Test. In the data analysis, t-tests and one-way analysis of variance were used to compare independent variables, while Pearson correlation analysis was applied to examine relationships between continuous variables. Results: In this study, nursing students' knowledge levels regarding vital signs measurement were found to be slightly higher than average (15.32±2.64), and their attitudes were found to be moderate (56.09±6.93). The 4th grade students achieved the highest average score (15.80±2.67) on the knowledge test. It was determined that students who were satisfied with receiving nursing education (57.12±6.74) and doing clinical practice (57.12±6.74) had more positive attitudes towards measuring vital signs. While 2/3 of nursing students displayed a positive attitude on the knowledge subscale, 62.2% agreed or strongly agreed with the statement ''SpO2 is a more reliable indicator than respiratory rate for reflecting early signs of respiratory dysfunction'', thereby endorsing incorrect information. In addition, 1/4 of the students stated that vital signs monitoring was a time-consuming and boring task. It was determined that more than 1/5 of the students had negative attitudes towards the items related to respiratory count, which is an important vital sign in determining clinical deterioration. Conclusion: It is recommended that the educational content in the nursing program be strengthened, support be provided from clinical instructors and nurses during clinical rotations to ensure that nursing students develop positive attitudes towards vital signs monitoring, and further observational studies be conducted.
