Objective: To evaluate the relationship between the body fat percentage vertical jump and one legged hop distances in young basketball players. Material and Methods: 146 young basketball players between the ages of 10 to 17 were included in the study. Baseline ® Skinfold caliper was used to determine skinfold thickness of the chest, triceps, abdomen, suprailiac and thighs. Three measurements of skinfold were averaged. Jackson-Pollock method was used for body fat percentage calculation. Physical performance was evaluated using vertical jump and one legged hop tests. Pearson correlation analysis was used to investigate the relationship between body fat percentage and vertical jump and one leggedhop distance. Results: In male players, there were no relationship between body fat percentage and one legged hop distance at dominant side (r=-0.044; p=0.78), one legged hop distance at non-dominant side (r=-0.161; p=0,31), and vertical jump distance at non-dominant side (r=-0.220; p=0.06) while there was strongly relationship between body fat percentage and vertical jump distance at dominant side (r=-0.412; p<0.001). Conclusion: Thepresent study showed that lowering body fat percentage may have positive effect on increasing vertical jump distance in male basketball players. The high intensity interval aerobic trainings should be added into the training program to improve physical performance in male basketball players. There is a need for studies examining the effect of fat burning trainings on the physical performance of male basketball players.
