ABSTRACT
Objective: It is very important to increase the level of knowledge about breast self-examination (BSE) of nursing students, who are the pioneering health professionals of the future. However, there is a limited number of studies in the literature on how BSE training using simulators affects the BSE knowledge level of nursing students. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of the training given with a handmade breast simulator on nursing students' level of knowledge about BSE. Material and Methods: This research is a quasi-experimental study with pretest and posttest control group. 60 nursing students were included in the study. The intervention group (n=30) was trained with a ''handmade breast simulator'', while the control group (n=30) was trained with the traditional presentation method. Both trainings lasted approximately 60 minutes. Data were collected using the ''Personal Information Form'' and ''Breast Self-Examination Information Form'' prepared in line with the literature. Wilcoxon test in dependent groups and Mann-Whitney U test were used to analyze the data. Results: It was determined that the posttest mean scores of the students regarding their BSE knowledge levels in the intervention group (19.00±2.84) were statistically significantly higher than the students in the control group (17.53±2.58) (p<0.05). It was determined that there was a statistically significant increase of 21.56% in the posttest mean scores of the intervention group compared to the pre-test, while there was a statistically significant increase of 6.70% in the control group (p<0.05). Conclusion: It was concluded that the training given with a handmade breast simulator was more effective than the traditional presentation method in increasing the knowledge level of nursing students about BSE. The results reveal that the use of handmade breast simulators in nursing education is a cost-effective, feasible and sustainable learning approach and provide important clues regarding the educational methods.
