ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study is to systematically review nursing dissertations and theses on diabetes self-management conducted in Türkiye. Theses and dissertations registered to the National Thesis Center were searched using the detailed search section with two search strategies on January 2, 2023. Firstly, with the keywords "nursing" in the subject area, ''diabetes'' in the title, and secondly, ''nursing'' in the subject area, and ''diabetes'' in the abstract. 925 studies were obtained and 391 duplicate publications were deleted. 477 studies were excluded because they did not meet the inclusion criteria. 7 of the remaining 57 studies were not included in the review because the full text was not available. The remaining 50 studies were examined in detail in terms of the type of research, author, year, design, sample, intervention (content, method, and follow-up), tools, findings, and public/patient involvement to the research planning and participants' satisfaction. 13 theses and 37 dissertations were included in this study. Education was mostly implemented as an intervention. As an intervention, monitoring was done in 12 theses, counseling was given in 8 theses, motivational interviewing was applied in 6 theses, and reminder techniques were used in 11 theses. It has been observed that web, mobile and video-based trainings have been used more in the last 5 years. In 16 studies, interventions were structured based on a model/theory. The most frequently examined outcome parameter is HbA1c. Six studies evaluated participants' satisfaction with the intervention. The result of this systematic review show that nursing interventions such as education, follow-up and motivational interviewing, contributed to the improvement of self-management outcomes such as self-care practices, self-efficacy and metabolic parameters in Type 2 diabetes patients. However, none of the reviewed studies included patient involvement during the planning of interventions, and only six studies evaluated the participant's satisfaction with the intervention, which is considered a deficiency in the literature.
