Dentists are involved in an interaction with saliva while they perform all kinds of operations on the mouth and surrounding tissues. The saliva has many important functions such as digestion, taste, protection of the teeth from caries, antimicrobial properties and bolus formation. For dentists, it is a high probility to encounter with primer disease caused by lack of saliva, which can lead to serious conditions for both oral and dental health, and autoimmune and inflammatory diseases which shows salivary gland involvement. Just as noticing of oral cancer cases by the early dentists is very important, salivary gland diseases should be known well by dentists additionally for directing patients to relevant departments in order to treatment of advanced cases. Dentists frequently encounter many salivary gland diseases of inflammatory, non-inflammatory and tumoral origin in their Professional lives. For example; many salivary gland diseases causing extraoral swelling in patients may be confused with odontogenic infections. The diagnosis of these diseases is often very difficult, but can be made by a multidisciplinary approach with many physicians. In this review, many salivary gland diseases, frequently encountered by dentists, from autoimmune diseases to neoplasms with salivary gland involvement, have been explained with reference to the current literature in order to update the knowledge of dentists.
