ABSTRACT
Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the altered lifestyle habits of university students with coronavirus disease-2019 in order to determine the risk of eating habits and emotional eating behaviour. Material and Methods: 1.026 university students studying at universities in Türkiye in the academic year 2021-2022 participated in the study. The general characteristics, lifestyle and dietary habits of the participants were recorded using a questionnaire in an online. Dietary habits risk was assessed using the Eating Habits Index and emotional eating behaviour was assessed using the Emotional Appetite Questionnaire. Results: The mean age of the participants was 20.55±1.79 years. It was found that the frequency of physical activity decreased, sleep duration and water consumption increased, and the proportion of overweight and obese students increased compared to before the pandemic (p<0.05). It was found that the index of eating habits was significantly higher in men, smokers and alcohol consumers (p<0.05). Eating habit index scores were found to be significantly higher in students who consumed sugary foods, potato crisps, baked goods, diet cookies, still drinks and tea/coffee (p<0.05). Eating Habits Index scores were found to be significantly higher (p<0.05) in students who ate irregularly, consumed convenience foods and ate at night. The total negative sub-dimension of the emotional appetite questionnaire scale was found to be significantly higher in those who consumed more convenience foods (p<0.05). Conclusion: During the pandemic, university students were found to have changes in lifestyle habits that may have a negative impact on health, and dietary habits risk and emotional eating behaviour were found to increase. Lifestyle changes such as healthy eating habits, regular physical activity, and adequate sleep duration may be recommended to reduce dietary habits risk and emotional eating behaviour in university students.
