Objective: Dentistry is a risky profession in terms of coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) infection due to exposure to saliva, blood, intense aerosols and droplets during oral treatment. The aim of the study is to determine the risk perception created by the COVID-19 pandemic in dentists and the affecting factors. Material and Methods: The study consisted of 25 questions with 3 parts. The first 4 questions of the COVID-19 Perceived Risk Scale included the cognitive dimension of personal risk, and the other 4 questions included the emotional dimension. The study was carried out between 4th and 24th of April 2021 based on social media (WhatsApp). In statistical analysis, Shapiro-Wilk, Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskal-Wallis test and Spearman's correlation coefficient were used. Results: Emotional risk perception scores of women were calculated to be higher than for men (p=0.007). It was determined that the emotional and total risk perception scores of the married people were higher than the singles (p=0.045, p=0.029). A negative correlation was found between the ages of the participants and their emotional and total risk perception scores (respectively r=-0.108 p=0.014; r=-0.105 p=0.017). The cognitive risk perception (p=0.026), emotional risk perception (p=0.006) and total risk perception (p=0.001) scores of public dentists were found to be higher when compared to those of working in private. The cognitive risk perception (p=0.005) and emotional risk perception (p=0.022) and total risk perception (p=0.001) scores of dentists working in filiation were calculated to be higher than those of non-working dentists. The cognitive risk perception scores of dentists who had COVID-19 were higher than those who did not (p=0.003). Conclusion: It has been determined that the risk perception created by the COVID-19 pandemic in dentists varies according to the factors. Emotional risk perception was calculated high in women, young people and married people, while cognitive risk perception was calculated high in those who had COVID19 infection. Emotional and cognitive risk perception were found to be high among those working in the public sector and in filia.
