ABSTRACT
Objective: This study was conducted as a descriptive and correlational study to determine the levels of exam anxiety and coping with stress in students taking the surgical diseases nursing course. Material and Methods: The sample of the study consisted of 213 students studying in the nursing departments of two universities in Türkiye between 1-15 May 2022 and taking the surgical diseases nursing course. Student introduction form, Stress Coping Styles Scale (SCSS) and Westside Test Anxiety Scale (WTAS) were used as data collection tools. Number and percentage calculations, arithmetic mean, Student t-test, Pearson correlation analysis and linear regression analysis were used in the evaluation of the data. Significance was accepted as p<0.05. Results: In the study, it was determined that the test anxiety scores of the students were 25.67±11.92. It was determined that the students used the most self-confident approach and optimistic approach method among the coping styles with stress. It was determined that there was a statistically negative and medium level statistically significant relationship between the WTAS score of the students and the self-confident approach (p<0.001) sub-dimension score of the SCSS, and a positive and low level significant relationship between the helpless approach (p=0.028) and submissive approach (p=0.011). According to the results of multiple linear regression analysis, it was determined that the factors significantly affecting students' exam anxiety were gender and ''selfconfident approach'' sub-dimensions. Conclusion: As a result of our study, nursing students' inadequate coping styles with stress negatively affect their exam anxiety. It is thought that the results of this study may contribute to the intervention plans to be implemented for the psychological effects of stress.
