ABSTRACT
Objective: This study was planned to determine the effects of the characteristics and perceptions of conscience of nurses working in a psychiatric hospital on their perception of compassion. Material and Methods: This study was planned in a descriptive and correlational design type. The universe of the study consisted of 168 nurses working in a psychiatric hospital, and the sample consisted of 150 nurses. The research data were collected between March-August 2022. In collecting the data; ''Descriptive Characteristics Information Form'', ''Conscience Perception Scale (CPS)'' and ''Compassion Scale (CS)'' were used. Results: Of the nurses who participated in the study, 38% were between the ages of 40-44 and 72% were female, 69% had a bachelor's degree and 72% were married. The average score that the nurses got from the CPS was 55.827±9.469 and the average score they got from the CS was 97.327±11.753. The stepwise regression analysis conducted to determine the cause and effect relationship between the independent variables and perception of compassion was found to be significant (F=34.264; p=0.000<0.05). 40.1% of the total change in the perception of compassion was explained by perception of conscience, working style, and general satisfaction with the job done (R2 =0.401). Perception of conscience increases the total score level of compassion perception (ß=0.477). General satisfaction with the job done increases the perception of compassion (ß=0.142). Conclusion: According to the study results, it was concluded that the perceptions of conscience and compassion of nurses who care for individuals with mental disorders are at a moderate level. The nurse's perception of conscience, satisfaction with the job done and patient-centered work increase the level of compassion perception. In this context, it can be discussed with the hospital management that the steps taken for nurses to work patient-centered would be beneficial. In addition, it is recommended that topics related to compassion be included in the training content when planning in-service training for nurses.
