ABSTRACT
Objective: In different cultures, the fact that grandmothers have a say in certain issues draws attention to breastfeeding as well as many other issues. This research was planned to examine mothers' thoughts about the effects of grandmothers on breastfeeding behavior. Material and Methods: The study is planned descriptively. It was conducted in January 15, 2019 and June 15, 2019 with 404 mothers who meet the inclusion criteria in 6 family health centers in 3 districts of Bursa province of Turkey. A question form prepared by the researchers in line with the literature was used in collecting the data. Descriptive statistics and chi-square test were used to evaluate the data. Results: According to the mothers, 75.4% of the maternal grandmothers and 54.2% of the paternal grandmothers positively affected breastfeeding. In the first 6 months, mothers who received additional food and formula advice from their grandmother had a higher rate of switching to supplementary food and formula in the first 6 months compared to those who did not and a significant difference was found (p<0.05). According to mothers, a significant difference was found between the effect of grandmothers on breastfeeding and switching to additional food (p=0.002). Conclusion: It was determined that breastfeeding behavior was also affected by the thoughts and behaviors of the grandmothers. It is important for health care professionals to provide health services by considering the biopsychosocial aspects of breastfeeding in detail and considering that mothers cannot be separated from their psychological and social environment in all cultures.
