ABSTRACT
It was aimed to help the evaluation of sense of smell disorders in forensic medicine, to reveal the problems in the forensic reporting process and to offer suggestions to these problems. The importance of sense of smell, sense of smell system, sense of smell disorders and medico-legal evaluation, smell tests, recovery in sense of smell disorders, malingering, evaluation within framework of the legal legislation in Türkiye were discussed with the current literature. After a forensic incident, medical history of person with smell disorder should be examined, and after a detailed anamnesis and examination, final condition should be revealed with imaging tests and smell tests should be performed. The combined application of psychophysical and electrophysiological tests for the diagnosis of anosmia and hyposmia in forensic cases may yield more reliable results. Quality of life questionnaires that can be applied to odour disorder cases may be guiding in cases where there is a gap in forensic reports. In forensic reports, causal link with event and whether it is permanent, whether it can be improved with treatment, degree of the disorder, changes that occur secondary to odour disorder in person are issues that should be considered. The increased risk of malingering due to secondary gain concerns after a forensic event is also a situation that needs to be considered. The forensic report to be prepared by taking all these issues into consideration will be an appropriate expert report with characteristics of being suitable for inspection, concrete, objective and up-todate.

Keywords: Olfactory dysfunction; malingering; olfactory test; psychophysical test; electrophysiological test
