ABSTRACT
Objective: The crime scene is a dynamic area where there is both evidence that will contribute to the solution of the incident and injured people in need of medical attention. Emergency medical services personnel may disturb with and relocate evidence while responding to the injured person. It may even cause the materials left at the scene while providing health care to be perceived as evidence. Our study aims to measure the awareness of students and health professionals about the approach to forensic cases and the dynamics of evidence. Material and Methods: The population of the cross-sectional study consisted of students of 178 Kütahya Health Sciences University Gediz Vocational School of Health Services and emergency health service personnel (nurse, doctor, emergency medical technician, paramedic, anesthesia technician, community health technician, driver) working in 210 Kütahya Health Sciences University, Evliya Çelebi Training and Research Hospital. The online questionnaire form includes a total of 54 questions on demographic characteristics of the participants, approach to forensic cases, identification of evidence, crime scene security and legal responsibilities. The responses of the staff and students to the survey questions were analyzed comparatively and the significance levels were examined. Results: There is a significant difference between students and staff in terms of receiving in-service and/or school training on the approach to forensic cases, the unit accepting the call as a forensic case, knowing the legal authorities and responsibilities in forensic cases, and the priority of the emergency medical team at the scene surrounded by a security strip. Conclusion: It is seen that both groups do not have the required level of education. The fact that the knowledge capacity of the working staff is higher emphasizes the importance of practical trainings. Our study underlines the deficiencies arising from lack of education.
