Objective: This cross-sectional descriptive study aimed to assess determinants of adjustment to stoma surgery in intestinal stoma patients. Material and Methods: This study included 35 colostomy patients hospitalized in the general surgery wards of two training and research hospitals in Ankara, Turkey between September 2015 and September 2016. One of these hospitals had a stoma nurse, whereas the other did not. The study was approved by the local ethics committee and the relevant institutions. All participants signed informed consent froms. Data were collected with a questionnaire and Ostomy Adjustment Inventory (OAI-23), once with a face-to-face interview before discharge, and three times by phone in one-month intervals. Statistical analysis was performed using numbers, percentages, the test of significance for difference of means, Student's t-test, oneway analysis of variance, the Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskal-Wallis analysis of variance, and the Friedman test. p0.05). Conclusion: In our study, it was determined that the adjustment of the patients with the stoma decreased significantly over time. We recommend that patients with intestinal stoma be given planned and individualized training on stoma care and stoma adjustment before and after stoma surgery, and after discharge.
