Amaç: İyonize radyasyon; atom veya molekülden elektron kopararak iyon oluşmasına neden olan radyasyondur. İyonize radyasyon, alınan doza bağlı olarak dokularda farklı tipte hasarlara sebep olabilir. Bu çalışma ile diş hekimliği fakültesine muayene için başvuran hastaların dental ve tıbbi görüntülemede kullanılan radyasyon ile ilgili farkındalık ve bilgi düzeylerinin belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Gereç ve Yöntemler: Çalışmamız Nisan-Eylül 2022 tarihlerinde, Gazi Üniversitesi Diş Hekimliği Fakültesi Ağız, Diş ve Çene Radyolojisi Ana Bilim Dalı ilk muayene kliniğine başvuran 18 yaş üzeri 520 hastaya anket uygulanarak yapıldı. Çalışmada kullanılacak olan anket 3 bölüm olacak şekilde tasarlandı. Bilgi testi bölümü verilen yanıtlar -1,0 ve +1 puan şeklinde skorlandı. Esas çalışma öncesi yapılan pilot çalışma ile anketin Cronbach alfa güvenilirlik katsayısı 0,651 olarak hesaplandı ve anketin güvenilir olduğu tespit edildi. Bulgular: Katılımcıların %56,5'i B bölümü bilgi testinden 11 puandan az alarak dental görüntülemede kullanılan radyasyon hakkında düşük farkındalığa sahip oldukları görüldü, %34,6'sı 11-16 skor aralığında puan aldı ve orta seviye farkındalığa sahip oldukları görüldü. Katılımcıların sadece %8,8'i 17 puan ve üzeri aldı ve yüksek farkındalığa sahip oldukları görüldü. Sonuç: Çalışma sonuçlarına göre hastaların radyasyon hakkındaki farkındalıklarının ve bilgi seviyelerinin düşük olduğu belirlendi. Eğitim durumu, gelir seviyesi ve diş hekimine gitme sıklığı ile farkındalık arasında pozitif bir ilişki görüldü.

Objective: Ionizing radiation removes electrons from atoms or molecules, resulting in the formation of ions. Ionizing radiation can cause different types of damage to tissues depending on the dose received. This study aimed to determine the awareness and knowledge levels of patients applying to the faculty of dentistry for examination about radiation used in dental and medical imaging. Material and Methods: Our study was conducted by applying a survey to 520 patients over the age of 18 who applied to Gazi University Faculty of Dentistry, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, between April and September 2022. The survey to be used in the study was designed to have 3 parts. The answers given in the knowledge test section were scored as -1.0 and +1 points. With the pilot study conducted before the main study, the Cronbach's alpha reliability coefficient of the survey was calculated as 0.651 and the survey was found to be reliable. Results: 56.5% of the participants scored less than 11 points on the Part B knowledge test, indicating a low level of awareness of the radiation used in dental imaging. 34.6% scored between 11 and 16 points and were considered to have a moderate level of awareness. Only 8.8% of the participants scored 17 points or more. They were considered to have high awareness. Conclusion: Based on the findings of this study, it was concluded that patients awareness and knowledge about radiation was low. A positive relationship was observed between education level, income level and frequency of dental visits and awareness of the patients.
