Amaç: Bu çalışmada, Fırat ve Dicle Üniversitesi Diş Hekimliği Fakültesi öğrencilerinin; human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) ile ilgili genel bilgi düzeylerini, bilgi edinme şekillerini, HIV/AIDS'in bulaş yollarını, HIV/AIDS'li kişilere karşı tutumlarını demografik verilerle birlikte değerlendirilmesi amaçlanmıştır. Bulgular: HIV/AIDS'in anne sütüyle bulaşabileceği sorusuna erkek öğrencilerin %20,3'ü kız öğrencilerin %8,5'i 'evet' olarak yanıtlamışlardır (p=0,013).

Objective: In this study, the aim was to evaluate the general knowledge levels of HIV/AIDS, ways of getting information, ways of transmission, and attitudes towards HIV/AIDS people together with demographic data, among the students of Fırat and Dicle universities faculties of dentistry. Material and Methods: A total of 288 students in Fırat and Dicle University Faculty of Dentistry were given questionnaires consisting of 35 questions about HIV/AIDS. SPSS 21.0 for Windows program was used for statistical analysis of the data. Pearson ki-square test was used for statistical analysis. The significance level was accepted as p <0,05 in these analyzes. Results: 20.3% of male students and 8.5% of female students answered yes to the question that HIV could be transmitted by breast milk (p=0,013). When evaluated according to the class of the students, 3,6% of the first grade students and 6.2% of the 2nd grade students point out that they can infect HIV/AIDS with mosquito smelting (p=0.038). 90.9% of 1st year students, 77.5% of 2nd grade students answered yes to the question that it is important to inform about AIDS at lessons (p=0.013). 30.6% of the students stated that they would not share the same house as someone they knew had AIDS. 56.6% of the students stated that they would not treat anyone they knew had AIDS. HIV/AIDS transmission routes and general knowledge levels of the students were found to be low. Conclusion: These results regarding HIV/AIDS knowledge suggest that our students need a significant improvement in their education about HIV/AIDS. In order to eliminate this lack of information, infectious diseases should be emphasized more in the first years of education.
