Objective: Diffuse hair loss is one of the most common hair diseases in women and multiple factors play role in ethiopathogenesis of this disease. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of serum vitamin levels in female patients with diffuse hair loss. Material and Methods:We retrospectively evaluated medical data of patients who were admitted to the dermatology outpatient clinic at hospital between October 2017-May 2018 with a diagnosis of diffuse hair loss. 60 patients with hair loss in the last six months and 60 controls were included in the study. The control group was created retrospectively from medical records of individuals who followed up with nevus and no complaints of hair loss. In the both groups, individuals with history of other systemic disease and drug intake, pregnancy, lactation period were excluded. Serum vitamin levels of both groups were statistically compared. Results: The mean age of the patient group was 34.3 year (17 to 53 year old) and the mean age of the control group was 30.5 year (16 to 56 year old). Although the mean serum zinc and folic acid levels were lower in the group with hair loss compared to the control group, there was no statistically significant difference (p>0.05). Mean serum iron and ferritin levels were higher in hair loss group than control group but no statistically significant difference was found. Conclusion: Iron deficiency anemia, folate, and zinc deficiency are thought to be factors that can cause disease in female patients with the complaint of hair loss. When we do not find a deficiency in laboratory tests, we think that the administration of zinc and folic acid and iron-containing preparations will be ineffective and unnecessary.
