Borderline personality disorder usually occurs in early adulthood; it is a serious psychological disorder characterized by impulsivity, emotional imbalance and deterioration in interpersonal relationships, with negative consequences for both the individual and the general population. The aim of this study is to determine which factors related to childhood and adolescence are leading to the development of borderline personality disorder in adulthood on the basis of existing researches. For this reason, firstly borderline personality disorder was explained, researches about the incidence in the community were examined and etiological theories about the causes of borderline personality disorder in adolescents were stated. Linehan's Biosocial Theory and Social Cognitive Theory have been emphasized among the etiological theories and the results of genetic and neurobiological researches have been included. It has been reported that temperament and personality traits, early childhood negative experiences, psychiatric disorders seen during childhood and adolescence and self-injurious behaviors that are not suicidal purposes may be risk factors for the emergence of borderline personality disorder and the studies conducted in the mentioned fields. Finally, valid and reliable measurement tools and treatment options developed to help diagnose borderline personality disorder in children and adolescents are mentioned; in the light of the literature, the results of borderline personality disorder symptoms in adolescence were discussed and recommendations were made.
