Long treatment duration and pain that occurs during orthodontic tooth movements are among the main problems that make it difficult for the patients to accept orthodontic treatment. In order to eliminate the problems such as white spot lesions that prolonged orthodontic treatment causes, root resorption, bad oral hygiene, poor co-operation, researchers have developed the techniques for accelerating orthodontic tooth movement. However, most of these techniques used for this purpose (corticotomy, pharmacological agent injection etc.) are invasive and cause side effects such as pain after the application. Another method which is used for accelerating orthodontic tooth movement and which is non-invasive is vibration application. With the vibration devices which were developed appropriately for daily usage firstly in 2008, the effectiveness of this technique has been started to be discussed again by the researchers. These devices which are claimed to accelerate orthodontic tooth movement by 50% and reduce orthodontic pain by the producer companies have been subjects to many researches. The idea that they can both accelerate orthodontic tooth movement and enable pain control has made these devices popular. In the studies performed, the effectiveness of the devices on accelerating orthodontic tooth movement and of the pain control with its relation with root resorption have been evaluated. However, according to the results obtained, the effectiveness of vibration devices is still controversial. In this review, under the titles such as the techniques for accelerating orthodontic tooth movement, biological mechanism of rapid orthodontic tooth movement, pain control, the usage of vibration devices and mechanism of effect, some information that will give an idea about effectiveness of these devices has been presented for orthodontists.
