Objective: The aim of this study is to determine the frequency of tooth brushing and decayed, missing, filled teeth (DMFT) in patients diagnosed with trigeminal neuralgia and to investigate the effect of disease on DMFT ratio. Material and Methods: A total of 36 patients with trigeminal neuralgia were included in this study. Oral and dental health examination forms including tooth brushing frequency and DMFT index were prepared. Sociodemographic data such as gender and age were recorded. The intra-oral clinical examination was performed by means of mirror and sond, and radiological examination was performed by panoramic x-ray. Results: The mean age of the patients was 67.02±7.00 and the mean age of the control group was 66.36±7.29. A statistically significant difference was found between trigeminal neuralgia patients and control group DMFT rates. In both the group of trigeminal neuralgia patients and in the control group DMFT ratio was found to be higher in females compared to males but the difference was not statistically significant. Conclusion: Some systemic diseases adversely affect the quality of life, life satisfaction, social and physical experiences of patients and also restrict their daily activities. As a result of the present study, it can be concluded that trigeminal neuralgia has a negative effect on the DMFT ratio and tooth brushing frequency.
