Objective: The aim of our study is to show the effect of free sugar consumption and oral-dental health in athletes. Material and Methods: Sixty-four athletes (43 males, 21 females) with a mean age of 15,8±2,6 years who participated in competitions in different sports were included. The athletes were divided into two groups: those with a free sugar consumption of less than 10% (less than free sugar consumption) and those with 10% or more (more than free sugar consumption). Clinical examinations were performed by the dentist in order to determine the number of teeth affected by the caries and their results. Decay, missing and filled teeth with the total number of decay, missing, total number of filled teeth (DMFT) index were calculated. Statistical significance was accepted as p<0.05. Results: Body weight and body mass index, daily energy intake and carbohydrate consumption of athletes who had free sugar consumption were higher (p<0.05). In addition, it was determined that the fat free mass and muscle mass of the athletes who had free sugar consumption were higher (p<0.05). Conclusion: The high percentage of energy from free sugar affects the oral and dental health in athletes. The athletes of the free sugar consumption is thought to affect health status and body composition.
