Objective: This study was conducted to determine the relationship between surgery fear and postoperative pain severity before septorhinoplasty. Material and Methods: This prospective descriptive study was conducted from March 14, to September 14 2020 in patients hospitalized in the otolaryngology of a university hospital. The data of the study were collected with 'Patient Identification Information Form', 'Surgical Fear Questionnaire (SFQ), and Visual Analogue Scale'. Data in the study were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA and Pearson correlation. Results: The study included 200 patients. The mean age of the patients was 26,12±7,81 years. The majority of the patients were women and had a high level of education. In the study the mean total SFQ score of patients was 46,8±23,4, the short-term fears subdimension mean was 22,8±12,09, and the long-term fears sub-dimension mean score was 24,0±12,22. The mean total score of postoperative pain severity of the patients was 7.21±1.28. The pain severity was 7.92±1.36 just before the administration of the analgesic drug in the postoperative period, and 6.34±1.37 at the 4th hour. A significant positive correlation was found between the mean pain score and the mean total SFQ and subdimension mean score of the patients (r=0.507 p<0.001). Conclusion: It was determined that septorhinoplasty patients with high levels of fear in the preoperative period experienced more pain in the postoperative period. Therefore nurses have an important place in patient care in reducing surgical fear. It is recommended to determine the surgical fear levels and causes of patients planned to undergo surgical interventions by nurses.
