ABSTRACT
Objective: It is known that the use of social media among young people is quite common. It is stated that this situation is especially important among candidates for healthcare professionals, as it poses a risk in future patient care quality. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate social media addiction in healthcare professional candidates and to determine its effect on nomophobia. The research was conducted to determine the effect of social media addiction of health sciences students on nomophobia. Material and Methods: The descriptive study was conducted between June 2020 and July 2020 with 580 students continuing their education in the Faculties of Nursing and Health Sciences of Inonu University. Personal introduction form, social media addiction scale, and nomophobia scale were used to collect data. Pearson correlation analysis and linear regression analysis were used as well as descriptive statistical methods in the evaluation of the data. Results: The average age of the students was 20.56±2.03, 42.4% of them were studying in the second grade, 82.2% were female, 49% were studying in the nursing department, 75.7% were core family structure. It was determined that 57.6% of them spent most of their lives in the province, and 89.3% of them had a moderate economic status. In the study, it was determined that 98.6% of the students use smart phones, 74.8% use the internet whenever they want and 93.1% every day. As a result of further analysis, it was determined that social media addiction had a statistical significance in explaining nomophobia (p<0.05) and social media addiction explained nomophobia by 9%. In addition, it was determined that there is a statistically positive strong relationship between social media addiction and nomophobia (p˂0.05). Conclusion: In our study, it was determined that healthcare professionals candidates experience moderate nomophobia and social media addiction affects nomophobia. It is thought that it will be important to determine the level of nomophobia and social media addiction in healthcare professional candidates and to raise awareness among healthcare professional candidates by organizing trainings on this subject.
