ABSTRACT
Objective: The aim of this research was to examine parents' opinions about their children's boxing experience. Material and Methods: The research group consisted of eight parents whose children were active boxers. Individual interviews were conducted with the parents and the interviews were recorded with a voice recorder. Afterwards, the recordings were transcribed verbatim in Microsoft Word software. The data were analysed using content analysis in NVIVO 11 Professional Software. Results: As a result of the analysis, a total of 7 themes were obtained. These were; 'reasons for athletes to start boxing', 'benefits of boxing', 'factors that increase boxing participation and maintenance', 'parent's expectations', 'parent's concerns', 'factors that prevent boxing participation and maintenance', and 'parent's recommendations'. It has been stated that boxing has many benefits in cognitive, health-related, appearance-related and psycho-social areas. On the other hand, parents stated that they were worried about financial issues, sports injuries and the athlete's rights were violated, and that such issues caused the athletes to quit boxing. In addition, factors such as negative parental behaviours and negative training environment were also expressed as factors that prevent athletes from participating in boxing. Parents' expected their children to have sportive success, stay away from bad habits, have moral values and contribute to the people around them. Finally, the participants suggested that the number of more conscious boxing coaches should be risen, a fair boxing environment should be created, and more importance should be given to sports medicine and female boxers. Conclusion: This research reveals the boxers' parents' in-depth views. The results should be evaluated by the officials of sport federations, sports managers, sport coaches and sports psychologists and also necessary measures can be taken accordingly. By this way, it can be ensured that all individuals involved in boxing have positive sports experiences.
