Objective: Total joint arthroplasty is the most effective treatment method to relieve pain and increase functional capacity due to end-stage osteoarthritis. Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is the most performed surgical procedure in the world, so it is very important to evaluate postoperative patient outcomes. In this study, it was aimed to determine the effect of preoperative knee joint function and fasting time on short-term patient outcomes after knee arthroplasty. Material and Methods: This analytical study was conducted on 214 patients in the orthopedics and traumatology clinic of a university hospital between 16 February and 16 June 2022. The data of the study were collected with Personal Information Form, Oxford Knee Score (OKS) and Postoperative Patient Outcomes Form. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-square test, and Pearson correlation test. Results: Out of 214 patients, 51.9% had left TKA, 86% were women, 85% had chronic diseases, their mean age was 65.6, the mean preoperative fasting time was 11.5 hours, and the mean OKS score was 9.9. In addition, it was found that as the OKS score decreases, the severity of postoperative pain increases, and as the preoperative fasting period increases, the severity of postoperative pain and the length of hospital stay increase. Conclusion: It is seen that the preoperative knee joint function of TKA patients is poor and the prolongation of the preoperative fasting period causes early postoperative problems. It is thought that the regulation of these factors will reduce early complications.
