ABSTRACT
Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the difficulties experienced by parents of Afghans immigrant patients in pediatric clinics with a phenomenological approach. Material and Methods: In this study, in which phenomenological research method was used, semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with 12 Afghan immigrant parents whose children were being treated in the paediatric clinic of a hospital in a province in northern Türkiye. Criterion sampling method, one of the purpose sampling methods, was used to reach the sample group. The data of the research were evaluated using thematic analysis. The study was conducted and reported according to the Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research checklist. Result: The mean age of the parents in the study was 31.66±8.27 years. Eleven of the participants were female, all were from Afghanistan, the average number of children was 3.1±1.1 and the average year of stay in Türkiye was 3.3±1.7. In the analysis of the data, four categories (effects of the child's illness on the parent, difficulties experienced in the hospital environment, problems arising from being in a different country, and expectations and suggestions about health services) and ten sub-themes (psychological, physical, social effects and situations, sociocultural problems, language and communication problems, perception of social support and expectations from healthcare personnel) were determined. Conclusion: It has been determined that language and communication problems are one of the most important problems experienced by parents. It was determined that the parents had difficulty in coping with the children's hospitalization process and were also affected psychologically, physically and socially. Similarly, more research is needed on strategies to fill knowledge gaps for immigrants' populations.
