ABSTRACT
Objective: This study was conducted to evaluate the relationship between the level of compassion fatigue of pediatric nurses and their coping styles with stress during the pandemic process. Material and Methods: The study is cross-sectional and descriptive and was carried out in Ankara between April-June 2021. 205 nurses who agreed to participate in the study constituted the sample of the study. Data were collected using the ''Descriptive Information Form'', ''Compassion Fatigue-Short Scale'' and ''Styles of Coping with Stress Scale.'' In the analysis of the data, number, percentage distribution analysis, independent sample t-test, one-way analysis of variance. And also multiple regression model were created according to the correlation level of the data. Results: The mean age of the pediatric nurses was 29.48±5.47 years, 90.2% were women, 74.1% of them are undergraduate graduates, 48.3% were in the pediatric service and 58.0% of them work in a university hospital. It was determined that the nurses' compassion fatigue score was 73.16 and they used more effective methods (self-confident approach, optimistic approach and social support) in coping with stress. According to the compassion fatigue model created, the helpless and submissive approach, which is one of the ineffective methods of coping with stress, and the optimistic approach, which is one of the effective methods in coping with stress, were defined as a significant predictor. Conclusion: It was determined that pediatric nurses experienced moderate compassion fatigue and nurses who used ineffective coping methods were more likely to experience compassion fatigue. Coping with stress strategies should be developed individually and institutionally. Nurses' methods of coping with stress can be strengthened with in-service training.
