Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze and compare the effects of eccentric and concentric exercises on pain threshold among adolescent archery athletes. Material and Methods: The study was conducted on 30 voluntary athletes, consisting of 15 male and 15 female, aged between 12-18. Athletes were randomly divided into two groups as Eccentric and Concentric Groups and they were assigned to do progressive resistive exercises including concentric and eccentric contraction 3 days a week for 6 weeks. Exercise program; It included stretching exercises for the trunk, arms and legs, and different types of contractions for the pectorals, upper trapezius, deltoid, biceps brachii, triceps brachii and wrist flexors-extensors muscles which are the most active in archery in the upper body region. The pain threshold was measured with mechanical pressure algometer. Mechanical pressure was applied on the right and left upper trapezius, deltoid, biceps brachii and forearm flexor group muscles. All measurements were made twice, before and after exercise. Results: In the concentric group, there was an increase on right-left trapezius, deltoid pain threshold values and a decrease on right biceps threshold after exercise compared to before exercise (p<0.05). There was a decrease on right biceps in the eccentric group (p<0.05). There was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of pre- and post-exercise values (p>0.05). Conclusion: According to our results, Concentric exercises increase pain tolerance in adolescent archers, eccentric exercises decrease pain tolerance. Concentric exercises may be safer for the active muscles in archery in terms of pain.
