Yaşlı nüfusunun her geçen gün artmasına bağlı olarak bilişsel fonksiyonlarda azalma önemli bir halk sağlığı sorunu hâline gelmektedir. Bilişsel fonksiyonlarda azalma için çeşitli koruyucu önleyici müdahalelerin, hastaların bilişsel yeteneklerini daha uzun süre korumalarına yardımcı olabileceği düşünülmektedir. Beslenme, yaşlılarda bilişsel bozukluk riskini azaltabilecek en önemli yaşam tarzı faktörlerinden biri olarak bilinmektedir. Artan kanıtlar; belirli besin türlerinin veya kapsamlı diyet kalıplarının uygulanmasının beyin sağlığını olumlu yönde etkilediğini vurgulamaktadır. Bilişsel fonksiyonlarda azalmayı önleme veya geciktirmede Akdeniz diyeti, hipertansiyonun önlenmesi için diyet yaklaşımları [dietary approaches to stop hypertension (DASH)] ve nörodejeneratif gecikme için Akdeniz-DASH müdahalesi [Mediterranean-DASH intervention for neurodegenerative delay (MIND)] diyeti gibi sağlıklı diyet modellerinin olası koruyucu etkilerinin olduğu bilinmektedir. Ayrıca beyin sağlığını korumada sağlıklı diyet modellerinin tek bir besin ya da besin grubuna göre daha etkili olduğu görüşü de dikkat çekmektedir. Akdeniz diyeti ve DASH diyetinin bir kombinasyonu olarak geliştirilen MIND diyetinin beyin sağlığı üzerinde olumlu etki gösterdiğine dair kanıtlar artmaktadır. MIND diyeti bileşiminde; çilekgiller ve yeşil yapraklı sebzeler başta olmak üzere taze meyve ve sebzeler, tam tahıllar, baklagiller ve yağlı tohumlar gibi bitki temelli besinleri barındırmaktadır. Beyin için sağlıklı olan bu besinler farklı mekanizmalarla bilişsel işlevlerin iyileşmesine katkı sağlamaktadır. Ayrıca beyin için sağlıksız olan besinlerin MIND diyetinde sınırlanması da diyetin olumlu sağlık etkilerini desteklemektedir. Bu derleme makalede, yaşlı bireylerde bilişsel fonksiyonun korunmasında etkili olabileceği düşünülen MIND diyetinin etkinliği güncel bilgiler ışığında incelenmiştir.

The decrease in cognitive functions is becoming an important public health problem due to increase in the elderly population each day. It is thought that various preventive interventions for decreased cognitive functions may help patients maintain their cognitive abilities for a longer period of time. Nutrition is known as one of the most important lifestyle factors that can reduce the risk of cognitive impairment in elderly. Growing evidences; emphasizes that implementation of certain types of nutrients or comprehensive dietary patterns positively affects brain health. It is known that healthy diet models such as Mediterranean, dietary approaches to stop hypertension (DASH) and Mediterranean-DASH intervention for neurodegenerative delay (MIND) diet have possible protective effects in preventing or delaying decrease in cognitive functions. It is also noteworthy that healthy diet models are more effective in protecting brain health than a single food or food group. There is increasing evidence that MIND diet, developed as a combination of Mediterranean and DASH diet, has a positive effect on brain health. MIND diet composition contains plant-based nutrients such as fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes and oilseeds, especially berries and green leafy vegetables. These foods, which are healthy for brain, contribute to improvement of cognitive functions through different mechanisms. In addition, limiting foods that are unhealthy for the brain in the MIND diet also supports the diet's positive health effects. In this review article, effectiveness of the MIND diet, which is thought to be effective in preservation of cognitive function in elderly individuals, was examined in the light of current information.
