Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı, konik ışınlı bilgisayarlı tomografi yardımıyla yetişkin kadın ve erkek bireylere ait sağ ve sol maksiler sinüs boyut ve hacim ölçüm değerlerini karşılaştırarak, maksiller sinüsün cinsiyet belirlemede kullanılabilirliğini araştırmaktır. Gereç ve Yöntemler: Ankara Üniversitesi Diş Hekimliği Fakültesi, Ağız, Diş ve Çene Radyolojisi Anabilim dalı arşivinden elde edilen tomografiler ile 18-65 yaş grubu aralığındaki 80 bireye ait (40 kadın 40 erkek) sağ ve sol maksiller sinüs yükseklik, genişlik ve hacimleri ölçüldü. Bulgular: Sağ maksiller sinüs hacmi (p=0,092) hariç tüm parametrelerin (sağ maksiller sinüs yüksekliği, sol maksiller sinüs yüksekliği, sağ maksiller sinüs genişliği, sol maksiller sinüs genişliği, sol maksiller sinüs hacmi) ölçüm sonuçlarının, erkeklerde kadınlara göre anlamlı derecede yüksek olduğu görüldü (p<0,05). Cinsiyet, kadın bireylerde %65, erkek bireylerde %70, her 2 cinsiyette %67,5 oranında doğru belirlendi.

Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the availability of maxillary sinus in determining sex by comparing the differences between right and left maxillary sinus size and volume measurement values of adult female and male individuals using conebeam computed tomography. Material and Methods: The right and left maxillary sinus height, width, and volume of 80 individuals (40 females 40 males) in the 18-65 age group were measured by aid of the radiographs that obtained from the archive of the Department of Ankara University, Faculty of Dentistry, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology. Results: The measurement results of all parameters (right maxillary sinus height, left maxillary sinus height, right maxillary sinus width, left maxillary sinus width, left maxillary sinus volume) except for right maxillary sinus volume (p=0.092) were found to be significantly higher in men than in women (p<0.05). Sex was determined correctly in 65% of female individuals, 70% of male individuals, and 67.5% of both sexes. Conclusion: Both the volume and size of maxillary sinuses were larger in men than in women. It was concluded that the maxillary sinus was not a determinant for sex determination in the population we studied.
