ABSTRACT
Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of individuals with idiopathic scoliosis (IS) according to curve severity and trunk asymmetries. Material and Methods: Forty-nine individuals with IS and mean age of 14.14±4.03 years were included in the study. Within the scope of the study, after obtaining the demographic information of the individuals, the curve pattern and Cobb angles on the x-ray, the axial trunk rotation with the forward bending test were evaluated. Body asymmetry with Scoliosis Appearance Questionnaire (SAQ), HRQoL with Patient Generated Index (PGI) and the Scoliosis Research Society-22 (SRS-22) questionnaire was evaluated. Results: Thoracic Cobb value of the individuals was 27.9°±11.1° lumbar Cobb value was 24.4°±9.8°. Thoracic trunk rotation was 8.59°±4.52°, while lumbar rotation was 6.4°±3.06°. While there was no relationship between the thoracic Cobb angles and the thoracic rotations of the cases and their quality of life scores (p>0.05); there was a negative, moderate correlation between lumbar Cobb angles and SRS-22 total scores (r=-0.333 and p=0.044), between lumbar Cobb angles and PGI completed by parents (r=-0.375 and p=0.045) and between lumbar rotations and SRS-22 image scores (r=-0.348 and p=0.019). There was a moderate correlation between SAQ and SRS-22 ''pain'' (r=-0.396 and p=0.005), ''function'' (r=-0.424 and p=0.002), ''body image'' (r=-0.417 and p=0.003) subgroup scores and SRS-22 total score (r=-0.472 and p=0.001), but not with PGI (p>0.05). Conclusion: In this study, as the severity of the curve, trunk asymmetry and deformity increased especially in the lumbar region compared to the thoracic region; pain, function, body image and quality of life were found to be adversely affected. According to our study, in the rehabilitation of individuals with scoliosis, both their appearance and body image perception should be among the planned treatment targets in order to increase the success of the treatment.
