ABSTRACT
Objective: Study was conducted to evaluate the effect of nursing students' problem solving skills on knowledge, attitudes and behaviors about evidence-based nursing. Material and Methods: The sample of this descriptive and cross-sectional study consisted of 89 students who agreed to participate in the research from nursing students studying in the spring term of 2018-2019 academic year at a university Health School. The data were collected through questionnaire developed by the researchers, the 'Problem Solving Scale (PSS)' and the Evidence Based Nursing Knowledge, Attitude and Behavior Scale. For analysis of data, number, percentage distributions, mean, standard deviation, Kruskal-Wallis, Mann-Whitney U tests and correlation analysis were used. Results: The average age of the students participating in the study was 21.10+1.40, 71.9% of the students were woman, 41.6% were nursing 2nd grade, 59.6% were Anatolian High School graduates. The mean score of the students' PSQ was 95.13±17.91 and total score average of 'Evidence Based Nursing Information, Attitude and Behavior Scale' was 98.22±13.67. The PSS score averages of the students who participated in the occupational symposium/congress, wanted to do research and did research were found lower and the difference between them was significant (p=0.001). Students who are 4th grade nursing and read magazines related to their professions have higher mean scores on 'Evidence Based Nursing Knowledge, Attitude and Behavior Scale' and a statistically significant difference was found between them (p=0.036). No statistically significant relation was found between the PSS and 'Evidence Based Nursing Knowledge, Attitude and Behavior Scale' scores of the students (p=0.09). Conclusion: In our study, it was found that nursing students' problem solving skills intermediate level and evidence-based knowledge, attitudes and behaviors were good level. In line with these results, it can be suggested to train nursing students on evidence-based practices in order to increase the quality and satisfaction of nursing care service and to standardize care, and to develop problem solving skills by using various education and training methods in nursing lessons.
